ATHLETIC TRAINING AT MARIST CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

Mari Gibson is the Athletic Trainer at Marist Catholic High School. She is certified as an Athletic Trainer (ATC) with the National Athletic Trainers Association (N.A.T.A.) and registered with the State of Oregon Health Licensing Office as an Athletic Trainer. In 1994 she received her Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine at Whitworth College. Mari is currently one of five ATC’s in the Sky-Em League and one of fourteen in the 4A/3A/2A/1A combined.

As participants in the Marist athletic program it is important that both parents and students are aware of the role of the Athletic Trainer and the Athletic Training Room as they relate to the student-athlete of Marist.

The role of an Athletic Trainer in the Secondary School setting is to be directly involved in the care, prevention, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries to all in-season athletes. As an N.A.T.A. Certified Athletic Trainer, Mari has the training and experience to provide initial injury assessment and first aid, establish rehabilitation programs for injured athletes, apply protective taping and padding, and advise and counsel athletes in areas such as nutrition and conditioning. It is also the responsibility of the Athletic Trainer to determine if an injured athlete may continue to participate in their sport, and when they will be allowed to return to participation. This determination is often done in conjunction with our volunteer consulting physicians or with the athlete’s physician.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ATHLETE AND THEIR PARENT(S)

  • Inform the Athletic Trainer of ALL injuries that occur during the season whether or not it happened while participating in their sport. This is essential in the recovery process.

  • Inform the Athletic Trainer of ALL Doctor visits regarding injury and return to participation.

  • Provide the Athletic Trainer with a written note from ALL doctor visits. This is important for documentation of an athlete’s injury and return to participation guidelines, plus it aids in communication between the Physician and Mari. In some cases the athlete will not be allowed to return to participation without a note from their Physician.

Participation in these areas is an essential link in the healthcare of the student-athlete at Marist Catholic High School.
